(From memory; not verbatim)
John: (after hitting several buttons) We're trying to reserve a room for your hotel, and on [travel web site] it says "Studio Garden View" and "Studio Garden View Freedom Rate." (The price difference was about $55/night) What's the difference in what you get?
(representative speaks)
John: You say the freedom rate has less amenities. What does that mean? What kind of amenities?
(representative speaks)
John: I mean, does it have sheets?
(r s)
John: Good. Does it have a TV?
(r s)
John: A TV, you know, a TELEVISION?
(r s)
John: Does it come with breakfast or anything?
(r s)
John: You don't know? ... You just know it has less amenities.
Me, whispering to John: Ask if it has a kitchen?
John: Does freedom rate mean no kitchen?
(r s)
John: You don't know. Well, is there someone who I can call at the ACTUAL location who might know?
(r s)
John: OK, let me write that down. Yeah, thanks.
(Hangs up. Begins dialing again. Pushes more buttons.)
John: Hi, my name is John, and I was talking to someone at central reservations and had some questions they couldn't answer. Could you call me back at ....?
Me: You got voice mail!?
John: Yeah.
Conclusion: Kauai, booked. Maui: still waiting to discover what the elusive "freedom rate" means, which appears nowhere that we could find on the hotel's web site.

Hi Katie,
ReplyDeleteI haven't been keeping up with your blog, but I saw Kelly the other day and your blog came up in conversation. So I swung back and skimmed over all the entries up until now.
Now, let me frame the following comments by mentioning that I am in the midst of my own wedding plans for the summer, and that I have spent the last three days trying to switch the date of our wedding due to guest list/parental/inability to cut down issues. Sense the pain in my voice, and I'll leave it at that.
That said,
1) Registering for wedding gifts is one of the most absurd and surreal experiences I've ever been thru.
2) I don't think I've had any fun wedding planning yet. Registering was kinda fun, but only once we got out of the china area.
3) At one point, I blamed the whole ordeal on the military/industrial/wedding complex. I haven't talked to any newlyweds that didn't cry/fight at least once during wedding planning.
4) I tried reading some of your other blogs, but since I'm not in my wedding-friendly place right now, they just started making me nauseous.
Thanks, Gerard, I think ... I won't take offense at the nauseous part (much :) )
ReplyDeleteYes, registering is bizarre. I really thought it would be over in an hour or two, but weeks later, I get the feeling we're still not finished, especially when items keep getting discontinued. And we're barely at half the amount one store recommends for "our size guest list." It's definitely getting a bit challenging!
Good luck with the date change switch. That would not be fun!
I know that phone conversation was probably frustrating when it happened, but it's hilarious to read!! I'm glad to see that the next post says you finally did book a room.
